Handcrafted pieces are notoriously challenging to produce, especially when it takes an average of 18 hours for artisans at the prestigious house of Hermes to create their magic. Are you ready to embrace the trend of Kelly handbags? Featuring a Kelly turnlock, a clochette with keys, and a trapezium silhouette, these bags from your favorite Hermes are selling like hotcakes.

Upon diving deep into the internet, we were pleasantly surprised to learn that the inspiration for Kelly handbags comes from saddle holders. The design underwent several modifications before arriving at the fresh and shiny version we know today in the 1930s. Initially brought into the spotlight by Grace Kelly, the Monegasque princess and American actress, she famously used the bag to hide her pregnancy from intrusive paparazzi, leading to its name.

The prototype of the Hermes Kelly Bag was known as Haut à courroies in 1892, named for its high handle. Originally large and designed to hold a saddle, it has since become a symbol of status. Created specifically for Hermes’ wife, Julie, by him and Ettore Bugatti, it was a minimalist handbag that could fit into a car door while allowing for saddle transport. In the 1930s, Robert Dumas redesigned it into a large travel bag called Sac à dépêches, marking a significant departure from the flat and simple designs of that era.

If you’re looking to add a touch of classic elegance to your wardrobe, this Hermes handbag is undoubtedly top-notch quality and has stood the test of time. If a bag priced at $3,500 in the 1990s is now around $12,000, it clearly signifies its peak popularity. With a single tubular handle secured by palladium hardware, a long shoulder strap, hanging clochette keys, and the iconic Kelly lock, these bags are stylish and ubiquitous.

If you’ve studied geometry, you’re likely familiar with the trapezium shape, which is perfectly embodied in the Darling Kelly. Its sleek top and wider bottom create a trapezium box silhouette. The flap is secured by leather straps on either side, with a padlock in between. Opening and closing the horizontal keyhole lock is as simple as turning and clicking—much easier than you might expect! Plus, the signature lock and charming hanging clochette with keys add a delightful finishing touch.

In terms of practicality, the Kelly bag features both a structured top handle and a shoulder strap, acting as your knight in shining armor. This allows you to go hands-free whenever needed! The strap is also detachable and adjustable. Your fashion choices can reflect your unique style; some may prefer slouchy bags while others opt for more rigid designs. It’s hard to believe that Hermes doesn’t offer a variety of options for its followers. The Kelly line is no exception, boasting two styles: the souple, which is a softer and less structured version, and the rigide, which offers a more formal and structured look.
